According to findings conducted in Oklahoma State University recently published in Nutrition Journal, freeze dried strawberry powder can reduce cholesterol levels (5 and 6 per cent in total and LDL cholesterol respectively) in overweight women.
In addition, levels of an oxidative stress biomarker (malondialdehyde) decreased in 14 per cent.
The study involved 16 women with central obesity, hypertension and disturbed glucose-insulin metabolism; these are the three main components of the Metabolic Syndrome (for more details click here). The women were asked to drink 25 grams of freeze dried strawberry dissolved in a drink every day for four weeks. The researchers from Oklahoma State University believe that the contents of phenolic flavnoids, fibre and phytosterols, which are concentrated in freeze dried strawberry powder might be responsible for this cholesterol lowering effects. These compounds have been already identified to lower cholesterol (for more information on phenolic compounds in cholesterol click here).
