An Introduction to the National and Global Food Sector

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food through the Food Institute Research Measure (FIRM), have established a programme of specialised skills training for postgraduate students and young researchers in the Food Area. Through the programme students will have the opportunity to take part in a number of short modular courses to enhance their skills for research and their readiness for jobs in the food sector. An upcoming module in the programme is: An Introduction to the National and Global Food Sector and it will be held in UCC from 25th to 27th May 2011.
Dr Joe Bogue from UCC is the academic coordinator of this module and Jo Fearon (j.fearon@ucc.ie) managing the administration of the module.
This module has been designed to give researchers in the Agri Food Sector, particularly scientists or others without a background in food business, an introduction to the following areas:
- Global Developments in Agriculture and Food
- Consumer Behaviour
- New Product Development
- Food Choice, Trends and Marketing Issues
- Retail Marketing
- The Role of co-operatives in the National and International Food Sector
- Entrepreneurship in the Food Sector
- Strategic Marketing of Food and Nutrition
Lectures will be provided by the Staff of UCC's Department of Food Business and Development, Centre for Cooperative studies and external Industry speakers.
There will be an assignment component to the module and some preparatory reading to be done in advance of attendance. Attendance of module and all food is provided by the FGDP as is local accommodation if required. Travel is not covered. The module will be eligible for 5 ECTS credits and priority will be given on the course to FIRM funded researchers.
