Science Foundation Ireland 2011 Programming Plans
15 Feb 2011
The welcome capital allocation in Budget 2011 of €161 million to SFI represents an €11 million increase on 2010 funding.
During this intense period of economic difficulty, this clearly highlights Ireland's commitment to investing in high quality scientific and engineering research to support long-term, sustainable economic development. The SFI research community continues to enhance Ireland's international reputation in science and engineering, enabling increasing levels of high tech foreign direct investment and indigenous innovation.
Pre-proposal submissions for the Principal Investigator award for 2011 have just been completed. The Research Frontiers Programme (RFP) call 2011 is already well under way. By the end of quarter two SFI anticipates that the following programmes will all be open for submissions - Starter Investigator Research Grant (SIRG), revised ETS Walton Visitor Award programme, Technology Innovation Development Award (TIDA), revised President of Ireland Young Researcher Award (PIYRA) and the joint SFI/HRB Translational Research Award programme.
With this financial provision and selected investment in programmes SFI anticipates maintaining its cohort of approximately 3,000 researchers, led by a team of approximately 350 Principal Investigators across a range of research areas.
