Several research centre and industries in Spain will participate in the HENUFOOD project, which aims to understand better how foods and in particular certain ingredients from these foods might have a beneficial effect in human health. The project has a €23.6 m budget, half of which is provided by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and the rest is coming from industry and academic partners. The project will focus on several endpoints for nutrients and it is particularly focused on the study of new biomarkers.
The project consortium is composed by 11 Spanish hospitals and 9 companies from the food industry and biotechnology sector.
Dietary fiber, fatty acids, phytsterols, probiotics and bioactive peptides among other phytochemicals will be studied in this project in order to determine their beneficial effect in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome and/or osteoporosis. The synergistic effect among several ingredients will be also investigated.
This is the second large collaborative project focused on the research of functional foods in Spain. Later this year another project called SENIFOOD, was partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation for investigating functional foods targeting health issues suffered by elderly people.
